My Grandma practically raised me. With a single working mom, I was lucky she was able to be there for me. Elva had a hard life, lost her mother at 5, barely made it through the Great Depression after her husband left her with 7 kids, worked as a Fry Cook at the local depot. Later she ran a tiny lunch counter and sent her kids out to sell to Brain sandwiches to WPA workers. She was a survivor, said to have sold bathtub gin to survive, she once time she shot a man for trying to steal coal from her shed.
But man could she COOK! The art of making something out of nothing was her specialty. Her recipes are all plain and simple, belly-filling and comforting, farm food made to feed the masses. Try a couple of her best recipes this Thanksgiving and celebrate Elva and give a nod to simplicity.
I remember Grandma Elva waking up way before dawn to get the turkey in the oven and start the giblets boiling. They went into the stuffing, and the neck bone went into a soup stock. Her pie crust was delicate as a butterfly wing and try as I may, I have never been able to replicate it. Her one message to you cooks out there... get the butter COLD, and don't be afraid of a little can of Crisco.
